Custom Tub & Tile Gives Back

2018 has been a great year for us, so this holiday season we wanted to donate our time and manpower to a local charity in an effort to help make our community a better place. An attitude of servitude is important to the culture of our company and we thought it would be a worthwhile opportunity to not only get some much-needed team bonding time but to also help the members of our community at the same time. A total win-win for all! After looking into our various options throughout the DMV we landed on a local charity in Cockeysville called Baltimore Hunger Project, and they had a cause we could really get behind. This particular charity really stuck out to us due to their incredible mission of ending childhood hunger and food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

The harsh reality for the students participating in this program is that their school sanctioned lunch is oftentimes the most wholesome and nutritious meal they receive all day. So what happens on the weekends when there is no school? That’s where the Baltimore Hunger Project steps in. The primary goal of this organization is best summarized on their website’s mission statement, “Baltimore Hunger Project is dedicated to eliminating the growing problem of weekend childhood hunger by feeding bodies and minds. We are bridging the gap between Friday and Monday by consistently providing weekend food packages to children identified as food insecure, in a compassionate and dignified manner. We raise awareness about the effects of hunger by establishing partnerships with community members, other organizations, and decision makers.” So essentially they fill food packs for 450 children in Baltimore City and County that are identified as “food insecure” by their guidance counselors. These packs are slipped into the students’ backpacks on Friday afternoon to take home to eat over the weekend. But what really makes them different is they strive to provide “kid-friendly” food, and fill these packs with meals the kids would really get excited about eating. As opposed to just filling these bags to provide mere sustenance.

According to a USDA survey the statistics are staggering. In 2017…

  • 11.8% of US households were classified as food insecure.
  • 6.5 million children lived in a household where both children and adults were food insecure.

With this problem of food insecurity affecting children all over the country it hit close to home knowing we were able to help the kids in our own backyard. Now after our efforts at their open packing session we were able to feed 450 hungry children in need to weekend sustenance. And I have to say, it feels good knowing we contributed to the 23,940 weekend bags that have been distributed by Baltimore Hunger Project in pursuit of their noble mission. And although the rate of food insecurity in the country is technically trending down it is important to remember that this problem can’t solve itself. But with the collective community efforts, like those at Baltimore Hunger Project, we are getting closer every day.

But why should you care? Well, I’m glad you asked! Choosing to work with a company who takes the time and effort to participate in service work says a lot about you, the consumer. Your real power lies in where and whom you spend your money with. And when you’re spending your money with Custom Tub & Tile you can feel confident that it is with a company who values positive change, community outreach, and an attitude of servitude.
